Application for RVT Retirement Status
Membership Classifications (Bylaw 6.3)
There shall be seven classes of Members: Full Members, Honorary Members, Honorary Life Members, Student Members, Associate Members, Complimentary Members and Retired Members.
Full Members:
Full Membership may be granted to a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant who provides proof of graduation from a formal course of study in Veterinary Technology that, in their graduating year, was approved by the Directors, or its equivalent. Full Members are entitled to vote at any meeting of the Members of the Corporation and are eligible to be Directors.
Members who fall into this category are;
RVT: members who have completed the necessary steps to obtaining their registered status
• graduate from an OAVT accredited college,
• successfully completed the VTNE,
• attended the Professionalism & Ethics Information Workshop,
• submitted a police check,
• submitted payment of OAVT dues
Pending: members who are working towards completing the necessary steps to obtaining their registered status. One or more of these steps may be completed or in process
• graduate from an OAVT accredited college,
• successfully completed the VTNE,
• attended the Professionalism & Ethics Information Workshop,
• submitted a police check,
• submitted payment of OAVT dues
Veterinary Technicians (not registered)
• graduate from an OAVT accredited college,
• submitted payment of OAVT dues
Honorary Members and Honorary Life Members must meet the requirements of a Full Member and shall have the same rights and privileges as a Full Member. Honorary and Life members are responsible to submit payment for errors and omissions insurance.
Honorary Members:
An Honorary Member may be admitted by the Directors for a period of one year, and is exempt from the payment of Association dues for that period.
Honorary Life Members:
An Honorary Life Member may be admitted by the Directors, and is exempt from the payment of Association dues for life.
Retired Members:
A person who qualifies and registers for Retired Status as outlined in Policy 5.1 Retired Member Status shall be exempt from continuing education requirements.
OAVT members are eligible for Retirement Status if the following criteria are met;
• they have been a continuous member for at least 25 years
• are retiring from the profession permanently
*A retired member may return to active status one (1) time if the change is made within one (1) year of retiring without having to complete the entire re-registration process.
*Student, Associate and Complimentary Members are not entitled to vote at meetings of Members of the Corporation and are not eligible to be Directors.
Student Members:
A Student Member is a person who is currently enrolled in a formal course of study in Veterinary Technology which has been approved by the Directors.
Associate Members:
An Associate Member is a person who has graduated from a course of study not approved by the Directors, or who is self-educated in the field of veterinary technology.
Complimentary Members:
A Complimentary Member is a person who is a member of another association with which the Corporation has entered into a membership agreement.
